Risk and Vulnerability Assessments
A risk assessment includes an analysis of the site's potential for criminal risks, threat and vulnerabilities based the client’s particular business activities. This risk assessment may involve local police, index studies, interviews, benchmarking and a review of the client’s own industry security standards to assist in defining the security objectives and the levels of security to be applied. The risk assessment concludes with a report of findings and recommendations complete with implementation priorities intended to reduce the risk of crime occurrence or mitigate the damage resulting from criminal acts.
Security Program Development and Master Planning
ASD’s consultants will assist the client in determining the specific security program objectives and the direction the security function should take in the ongoing management of the business operation. Such services involve elements of physical, electronic and procedural security. Planning and budgeting for facility security are also important points in the development of a security program.
CPTED Analysis
ASD services are grounded in a fundamental understanding of a security strategy commonly known as “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” or “CPTED”. This principle is based on the assumption that “the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in fear and the incidence of crime and to an improvement in the quality of life”.
The emphasis of CPTED is to avoid fortressing methods to achieve a level of security; but to use spatial relationships and design elements such as landscaping, lighting, furnishings and signage as a means of control. Security systems and target hardening strategies are then used to supplement or reinforce CPTED initiatives. CPTED allows architects and planners to create a “climate of security” which is often imperceptible to the users of the space, frequently costing less and adding more value than other less desirable design solutions.
